Economists like to say that there are two things certain in life: death and taxes. We don’t know when death comes, but we know it will. We don’t know how much we will pay, but we know the bill will come. In a sense, those are known unknowns, we know what we don’t know. But there are other events that involve radical uncertainty, that are unknown unknowns: we don’t know that we don’t know.

This talk tries to identify some structural megatrends that are shaping our future in an irreversible way. The times they are a-changin’, said the poet. However, the simultaneity of those trends makes possible very different scenarios, some of which perhaps we never dreamt about. Even if in the long run we are all dead, perhaps we should care, get informed, and act.

As a Spanish poet said (liberal translation) “traveler, there is no road/ your path is made on walking” (“caminante no hay camino/se hace camino al andar”) - Alberto de Castro.

Alberto de Castro is a professor of Economics at Católica Porto Business School, holding a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He was CPBS’ first Dean. Currently, he is the Student’s Ombudsman.

Alberto de Castro defines himself as an economist who likes to look at the reality – the Applied Research Center that he founded is a living proof of that stance, with very close and established relations with some important industries like footwear, cork, and metal.

As a professional he has held positions in several important companies (e.g., EDP, Mota-Engil). Nowadays, he is the Chairman of Altri a cellulosic fibers company, and a member of the Board of Mystic Invest. He chairs the Audit Board of Superbock Group and is a member of the Portuguese Venture Capital Initiative investment committee.

Alberto represents the University at AEP (the Portuguese Entrepreneurs Association) and is a member of the Diocese’s Economic Council. On his spare time, he writes for an economics newspaper supplement, and likes to hear to music and watch good movies. He supports (fanatically) F.C. Porto.
