• To be able to critically analyze international, regional and national rights frameworks, with a particular emphasis on the U.S and Europe. Basic human rights research skills in each jurisdiction.

• To understand how the European Court of Human Rights and the United States Supreme Court approach and interpret questions of human rights and be familiar with the important human rights jurisprudence of each court. This includes the application of analytical doctrines such as Strict Scrutiny and Legitimate Aim/Democratic Necessity. Students will also learn about the application of the margin of appreciation and its application in the European Court.

• To understand some of the cultural and historical differences between the United States and European countries through the use of human rights legislation and case law.
