01. Who is this programme for?

This programme is designed for graduates from a wide range of fields — including Law, Management, International Relations, Human Resources, Technology and related areas — who wish to acquire or deepen their expertise in arbitration, mediation and online dispute resolution (ODR), in both national and international contexts.

It is suitable for early-career professionals, those undergoing career transitions, and experienced practitioners, as well as academics and final-year students.

02. Is a Law degree required?

While a background in Law is recommended, particularly for those wishing to act as arbitrators or legal counsel in arbitral proceedings, the programme is open to graduates from other disciplines.

The approach is designed to be accessible to professionals from diverse academic backgrounds, such as Management, International Relations, Human Resources, or Technology, provided they have an interest in conflict resolution within national or international settings.

03. What is the course format and duration?

The Postgraduate Programme will run throughout the 2026 calendar year, delivered primarily online, with some optional in-person sessions (when applicable).

Classes are scheduled in the evening (after-work hours), making the programme accessible to professionals working full-time or residing outside Porto.

04. Are the classes live or recorded?

Classes are taught in real time (live sessions) to foster interaction between lecturers and participants.

Whenever possible, sessions will be recorded and made available for later review.

05. How is the assessment carried out?

Assessment is continuous and conducted per course unit.

It may include open-book or take-home exams, written assignments, presentations, reflection papers, multiple-choice questionnaires (MCQs), simulations, and case studies.

The focus is on practical application and skills development, using methodologies tailored to the nature of each discipline.

06. Who are the professors?

The faculty is composed of leading academics and professionals, both national and international, specialising in arbitration, mediation and ODR, all with extensive practical experience and strong ties to academia.

07. What type of certification is awarded?

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Postgraduate Diploma issued by the Porto Faculty of Law, Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

The programme also includes an International Mediation Certification, recognized both nationally and internationally, for those who meet the necessary requirements.

08. Does this programme grant access to professional practice in mediation or arbitration?

Yes. The training meets the legal requirements for certification as a mediator (as applicable).

In the field of arbitration, it provides the theoretical and practical foundations necessary to act as arbitrator, party counsel, or legal expert providing technical support in arbitral proceedings.

09. Does completion of the programme grant access to the Portuguese Ministry of Justice’s Private Mediators List (DGPJ)?

Yes.
Successful completion of the Postgraduate Programme in International Arbitration, International Mediation and Online Dispute Resolution (ADR and ODR), with a positive assessment in the Bootcamp modules on Conflict Mediation, grants access, upon request, to the Private Mediators List of the Portuguese Ministry of Justice.

After registration, graduates may also apply to join the List of Conciliators of SISPACSE in Portugal and the List of Public Mediators of the Justices of the Peace, as well as international mediation panels such as those of the ICFML and the institutions recognised through its certification.

10. Which international mediator panels can I access after completing the programme?

Participants who achieve a positive assessment in the ICFML Bootcamp and successfully complete a role-play assessment as mediator, evaluated by an independent panel of experts certified by the ICFML, may apply for the ICFML Level 2 Advanced Certification.

This certification attests to advanced mediation competence and enables recognition by leading international institutions, including:

  • Asia Mediation Centre (AMC)
  • Institute of International Dispute Resolution and Professional Negotiation (IDRRMI)
  • Institut Français de Certification des Médiateurs (IFCM)
  • Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI)

This recognition is possible because ICFML is a founding member of the Alliance for Mediation Standards and an accredited Qualified Assessment Program (QAP) of the International Mediation Institute (IMI) in Portuguese-speaking countries.

To join the Private Mediators List of the Portuguese Ministry of Justice, applicants must:
