This programme is taught in Portuguese.
Communication, in both its written and spoken forms, is a central pillar in the creation and transmission of knowledge, shaping the way we interact, collaborate, and influence the world around us. Spoken communication enables the immediate exchange of ideas, the clarification of questions in real time, and the expression of emotional nuance and intonation, which add depth to discourse. Written communication, in turn, ensures the permanence and accuracy of information, allowing complex concepts to be structured, analysed, and critically reviewed. It is therefore essential to academic, scientific, and professional development. Both forms are inseparable in the learning process and in the building of solid social and professional relationships: effective expression is not merely the ability to speak or write, but the capacity to articulate ideas clearly, coherently, and persuasively.
Beyond this, communication is also an instrument of power and social transformation, capable of influencing perceptions, shaping opinions, and driving cultural and political change. The word, whether written or spoken, is not simply a vehicle for information, but an active force that constructs realities and forges connections between individuals and communities. In professional contexts, communicative effectiveness can determine leadership capacity, conflict resolution, and success in complex negotiations; on a personal level, it strengthens understanding and the ability to build bridges between different perspectives. Mastery of communication therefore goes far beyond the mere transmission of content: it is a strategic skill, essential to intellectual, emotional, and social development, whose impact resonates across all dimensions of human experience.
Accordingly, this course seeks to identify the main constraints associated with public speaking and, at the same time, to provide tips, solutions, and both classical and contemporary techniques to improve oral and written communication. It also clarifies common errors in the Portuguese language to avoid, thereby equipping participants for a wide range of situations, from social interactions and informal complaints to professional presentations and conference communications.
