Mission

Within the European Single Market, competition regulation is a fundamental pillar for its effective functioning.

The primary purpose of European Competition Law is to prevent distortions of competition within the internal market by monitoring anti-competitive business practices, merger operations, and State aid.

Competition law thus aims to promote multiple objectives, protecting consumers, safeguarding economic efficiency, and ultimately contributing to economic progress and social welfare.

The analysis of judicial and administrative decisions in this field, as well as the subsequent academic and doctrinal developments, constitutes the main mission of the Observatory on the Application of Competition Law.

Aims and Scope

The Observatory on the Application of Competition Law – co-financed by the European Commission – seeks to enable all stakeholders, academics, jurists, lawyers, judges, economists and public authorities, to gain a deeper understanding and ensure a more effective application of competition law.

The Observatory aims to develop extensive research on the application of competition law by national, European and international courts, to monitor ongoing legislative initiatives in this field, and to foster well-founded doctrinal reflection on controversial issues of competition law.

Furthermore, the Observatory will implement advanced training programmes for academics, practitioners, judges and business professionals, thereby strengthening awareness of the importance of competition law and the implications of its infringement.
