Learning outcomes of the curricular unit

At the end of the semester the students should be able:

  • To acknowledge the difference between an international crime and a domestic crime;
  • To identify the elements and understand the differences between the four core international crimes: crime of aggression, crime of genocide, crimes against Humanity and war crimes;
  • To understand the legal nature of piracy and terrorism and their relation with international crimes;
  • To discuss the justification to enlarge the list of international crimes to include ecocide;
  • To recognize the different modes of liability for the participation in the comission of an international crime (principal, subsidiary and command/superior responsibility)

1. A theory of international crimes. Definition and structure.
2. Crime of Genocide.
3. Crimes against Humanity.
4. Crimes of War.
5. Crime of Aggression.
6. The relation between international crimes and the perils of a hierarchy.
7. Are there other international crimes? Piracy, Torture, Terrorism and Ecocide.
8. Modes of liability for international crimes.
