On March 23, Universidade Católica Portuguesa will open applications for its scholarship program for refugee students. A total of 15 spots are available for bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Lisbon, Porto, Braga, and Viseu, with tuition waived.
The programme, which is running for the 5th consecutive year, is aimed at students in a humanitarian emergency, with supporting documents.
Applications will be accepted from March 23 to April 7.
According to Inês Espada Vieira, Coordinator of the Initiative to Support Refugee Students and Researchers, “Supporting refugee students in pursuing or completing their academic studies benefits not only the individual, but also their family, the community, and Portuguese society as a whole.”
Inês Espada Vieira adds: “Now in the fifth year of this initiative, we are even more convinced that this opportunity is essential for a new future for these students—not merely as victims of war, but as protagonists of a fulfilling, independent, productive, and meaningful life. Several refugee students have already completed their studies at Católica. Their examples are inspiring to their peers and to the community, which sees in them a testament to resilience and integration.”
This programme forms part of the national effort to welcome and integrate refugees and to fulfil the 2030 Agenda proposed by the United Nations.
